Observational Drawing with Charlotte

Look around you. What do you see? A yard? A chair? Pencils? Your hand? Everything you see or feel or imagine in your space right now is a wonderful subject to draw.

This activity is quite simple and fun for all ages. All you need is a drawing hand, a utensil to draw with (pencil, marker, pastel, charcoal), and paper.

Put yourself in a comfortable location. For me, my desk is my favorite place to draw or out in my yard. If you are in your yard, make sure you have a hard surface behind your paper.

Now draw! It is up to you how long you want to draw and how detailed you get with your drawing. A good base is to spend 10 minutes trying to fill most of the paper with what it is you are observing. Draw big and be expressive. This exercise is to get the creative juices flowing and feel the pencil move across the paper, not stiffen up and draw tiny!
